Love the Way You Lie

A Fable Fic

Chapter 20

The man stood in the doorway with his usual scowl, though despite his angry demeanor that he had most of his days, his face continued to look angelic nonetheless. His arms were crossed against his chest as his eyes narrowed at the blonde woman and her eyes widened at the sight of him. She slightly backed away from the Hero and laughed nervously as she waved her hands, dismissing what he was thinking.

"I was uh, just telling Miss Sophie about the renovations." She muttered nervously as she stood backed against the wall.

"Well," Reaver cracked his neck and huffed, "it's passed your time, so you're relieved of your duties for the day. You can go and begin your week off." The dark haired man forced a fake smile to the woman and gestured with his hand for her to leave.

Terri bowed her head slightly with a nervous smile, and she sighed. "Thank you, Master Reaver. Sophie, please take care alright? I'll be around if you need me." She gave the redhead a wink and placed a hand on her shoulder, then she walked out without looking back, leaving Sophie with more questions than answers.

"Why did you give her a week off?" I asked suspiciously. "You never give anyone a day off, let alone a week." I tilted my head in curiosity and looked into his narrowed eyes.

"She deserves it, I suppose, and plus I need some time to reconstruct things around the mansion and..." He paused and let a smile crack. "I'd like to introduce you to our newest staff member, he will be your personal care assistant until you're well enough, then he will be our personal assistant." He knelt down next to her and placed a hand on hers, his smile became warm and his eyes widened to show a hint of a sparkle in them. "I know he's not Oliver, and I'm...sorry. But he's here to help. Barry! Could you come in here please?"
He called out loudly.

"Reaver," I sighed with a bit of sorrow, "I don't really think this is necessary..."

Reaver stood up in a swift motion and kept his eyes on hers. "Of course it is, you need-" The short young man walked in with his head bowed. "Ah, here he is, Barry! Come and meet the Hero." Reaver grinned as he looked up and eyed the boy.

The boys hair was a bright shade of copper as he pushed his long bangs from his eyes, revealing that his irises were different colors, and then I remembered him from years back. There was a small boy begging for money on the streets of Bowerstone, dirty and too skinny to barely even walk, and he had been the sweetest thing I had ever come across. He instantly smiled when he laid his eyes upon me, and his excitement could barely be contained. He jumped up and down slightly and ran to my side.

"Oh goodness, it's you! The Hewo!" He said with his adorable speech impediment. "I thought I'd nevew see you again!"

"Barry Hatch? No, definitely not the same.. My goodness you've grown so much!" I sat up and pulled him into a tight embrace, happy that he was still alive and well. "I can't believe it." I smiled with a slight tear in my eye.

"You two know each other...?" Reaver said in surprise as he stared at us.

"Yes," I grinned, "I actually helped him when he was younger, and I always hoped to see him again." I ruffled his hair and giggled as he continued to hug me tight. "How old are you now?" I asked him.

"I'm now twenty one." He replied with a grin.

"My Gods, it's been that long? Ah well, I'm so excited you'll be helping me here Barry! And if you ever need anything at all, just please let me know." I smiled and let Barry loose from my grip, and he scratched his head shyly.

"Sophie," Reaver growled slightly, "he's here to work, so try not to baby the boy." He shook his head and massaged the bridge of his nose.

I looked up at him defensively and huffed out loud as I stared him down. "And he is also my friend, so I suggest you treat him with respect." I warned. I instantly became protective of him, knowing how Reaver was and how innocent this young boy is. I looked back at the ginger boy and smiled warmly, he smiled back.

Barry stood up and bowed toward Reaver with a silly grin. "I pwomise that I'll be the best worker I can be. And also, is the Hewo youw beautiful wife?"

Reaver looked over at me for a moment, his expression blank and his eyes unreadable. "No, Barry. She's a close friend of mine." His eyes remained on mine.

For some reason I grew angry and hurt, even though he was right, we had no label with one another. I leaned back against my pillows and looked down. "Reaver, I need to speak with you privately. I'm sorry to make you leave, Barry. I'll chat with you later hun." I smiled kindly at him and rubbed his arm. Barry nodded and smiled at me as he scurried out of the door and into the hallway, then Reaver looked over at me and stayed near the door.

"Where have you been the past few weeks?" I quickly asked as soon as the door was shut. "Terri wouldn't even tell me, like you instilled feared in her if she said anything."

"Sophie, I've been here-"

My expression changed entirely, my brow furrowed and my heart raced as my anger grew. "Don't lie to me. Things are already complicated enough as it is between us, so don't even try to weasel yourself out of it."

"Like what?" He asked.

"I'm apparently your friend? After I save your bloody life and confess my love for you, though I'm still confused on it..." I sighed and scratched my arm.

"Sophitia, please just calm yourself. Are you able to stand up?" He suddenly asked, his expression now soft and his smile wide. He walked over toward me and outreached his hand.

"Yes, why?" I asked curiously.

Reaver grabbed my hand and slowly pulled me up from the bed as I made my legs swing out from the covers. "Come and follow me." His arms were wrapped around my torso to support me, due to my legs being weak from inactivity. He led me slowly down the stairs and around into the dining area, and it was decorated beautifully with candles and fresh roses at the centerpiece. I stopped and stared at the sight as Reaver moved forward and walked up to one of the chairs. "Oh my Gods, Reaver... What is this about...?"

He smirked and nodded toward the chair. "This is my apology, now sit down and enjoy yourself."

"I'm not even dressed appropriately." I blushed slightly and made a face.

"It doesn't really matter now does it? I've seen you naked, by accident of course, but you know." He wiggled his eyebrow and wore his devilish smirk as I walked up to the chair and sat down, then wrapped my robe tighter around me. "Just enjoy yourself tonight, love." He clapped his hands twice and then several of the waitstaff came out holding platters.

As our time together progressed in the manor, Reaver and I rather enjoyed ourselves like we did months prior, and I felt that this was how he was back in his mortal days. Once I finished my meal, Barry came out with a serving tray that had been golden, then he set it down in front of me with a large smile. I looked up at him and narrowed my eyes, but he just laughed and walked back into the kitchen with the rest of the staff, but he soon peeked his head out. I looked back at Reaver and eyed him questioningly as my hand slowly hovered above the cover.

"Ah hah, before you open that, I want you to know several things, my dear Sophie. You already know I'm... I'm sorry about the recent events, and past events. Nothing can truly fix how I was in the past, but there's some news I've been meaning to share. I'm selling the manor."

My hand slid back down to my side and I was completely caught off guard by his confession. "What, why?" I asked quietly.

"It's time that we have a large enough place, you know, fit for a king." He folded his hands together and smiled with a glint in his eyes.

"What are you saying?" I asked.

"Pick up the cover." He said smoothly.

I nodded, still unsure of his intentions, but I lifted the platter and there were some papers that had been neatly folded, placed in the center. I picked them up and read the words, and it was a deed to Castle Fairfax. There was also a sheriff's report stating that since Lucien died, there had been odd activity within the walls of the castle, bandits had been sneaking in and illegally occupying the building. "Oh my Gods..."
I breathed in disbelief.

Reaver nodded and leaned back in his chair as he kept his eyes on me. "A lot of the nobles have been slaughtered or held as captives, and there has been too many deaths. So they desperately wanted you to have these papers, and they want you to take over Castle Fairfax and rule as their leader. They want to be protected by a bonefidey Hero."

"This is exactly what Theresa showed me... It was a vision that I would have to make a difficult decision, and becoming a monarch was part of it... And I must, to save these people, I have to." I folded the papers up and placed them back onto the platter, my mind spinning around with the sudden news.

"Exactly what I was hoping for. So, I am officially selling the manor and we will move in at once, well after we dispose of those pesky bandits." The dark haired man smiled. "Hmm, King Reaver... I love the sound of that, kind of rolls off your tongue."

"I wouldn't do this for power, Reaver." I reminded him with a concerned look.

"Oh I know, it's just an added bonus." He laughed. "But Sophie my dear, there is one more thing that I must discuss with you before you make any real decision. Go ahead and open up that smaller platter," Reaver pointed toward the center of the table, "please."

I gave him a look and reached for it, small enough to fit within my hand, and I pulled the small lid off and gasped loudly as I looked down at a small velvet box. It sat open, revealing a large silver and diamond ring, the light causing it to sparkle. My eyes went wide and I looked up at him speechless, but even more stunned than anything. "Reaver, I... This is unexpected..."

"I've realized, with Terri's help, that I wasn't satisfied without you being by my side. She has helped me wake up since you've been here with us, and your presence has changed everything around here. I want to make you the happiest woman in Albion, so will you become my beautiful bride, Sophitia?"

I instantly began to cry as I reached for the box, grabbing the ring from it and sliding it gently on my finger. "Reaver, yes... I do." I looked at my hand as the ring dazzled, and Reaver stood from his chair and walked to my side. I stood up slowly and our eyes met, his hand then wrapped around my waist to hold me up, then that's when his lips pushed against mine and the fireworks began. The man I fell for was finally on the surface, and I felt his warm skin against mine, because he now had life within him.
Sophie is safe but injured, and there will be some changes made within the Bloodstone Manor.
