La Luna del Cacciatore

Chapter 4

I pulled into the large parking lot of the local mall and quickly claimed a parking spot, and thankfully it was close to the entrance. It wasn't as crowded as it's normal capacity on a Friday, and I wasn't going to complain about it. 'No worries about getting shoved around...' I thought.

I walked slowly through the building store to store, trying my best to enjoy my day off and to not be too indecisive, window shopping to my heart's content. I strolled along, blankly staring through the shop windows, and my hands resting in my pockets to fiddle with the loose change. I usually didn't pay much attention to my surroundings when I had been on my own, but I should have started that day.

A hand gripped at my shoulder with brute force, so I yanked myself forward in an attempt to escape the grip. I spun around with my fists balled and in position with a fighting stance. A soon as I saw my 'attacker's' face, I quickly grew at ease and smiled widely.

"Dmitri, oh my gosh... Is that you? I-I haven't-"

"it's good to see you too, Terra." The tall male said with his Russian accent.

I suddenly jumped into his arms and embraced him tightly, with no plans of ever letting him go. "I've missed you so much! Where have you been? When did you come back?" I flooded him with dozens of questions, still hanging on to my friend.

"I got back about two weeks ago, and I planned to look you up." He said delightedly. "How
have you been? And how's the family?"

"Well," I said uneasily, "mom passed away... about seven years ago..." My smile quickly faded into a frown.

"Oh, I'm so sorry Terra..." He pulled me in for a sympathetic hug. "I do wish you've been well with that. I'm sorry I couldn't be there for you and your father."

"It's fine... It's been years, so I should start being happy now. She'd want me to."

"Very true, so how have you been otherwise?"

"Oh it's been fine. I finally found my own place, and I have a job. It's not great, but it's a paycheck every week."

"Great! I'm s happy you're doing well. So, what are you up to on this fine day?" He smiled, then folded his arms across his chest.

"Honestly, not much. Just browsing and trying to enjoy my weekend off."

His face was soft and compassionate now, looking at me with a grin. "Hey," he said as he turned away, "do you, I don't know... Want to get something to eat?"

"I'd love to." I answered.

We walked down the mall and outside to the lot, where just feet away, there was a restaurant that he and I used to go to for special occasions with our parents. We had gotten a lucky break with the seating, and were escorted to the last empty booth in the place. Dmitri took my vest and hung it on the coat rack near our seating, and he walked back with a smile.

I had the opportunity to look him over, and it seemed as if nothing had changed except his height. He was tall at a young age, but he had grown even taller now; about an impressive six foot six. His shoulder length light brown hair had been pulled back with a simple silk ribbon, and his dark brown eyes watched me ever so carefully.

He sat and began to tell me about his travels back to his home in Moscow, and how his family had been since I last saw them. I had considered his mother, brother and sisters to be a part of my family, and we always were close. He had wanted to talk about me and what I had done in the years he was absent, and I told him all I could. It had been many years since we sat and talked like this, and I was just a wee girl then. He had been my best friend and my baby sitter, considering he was older than me.

"My goodness, you look beautiful Terra. You've grown so much..." He complimented.

My face turned warm and red from embarrassment, so I turned away to catch my breath. "Please, e-excuse me for a moment..." I stuttered.

I began to stand up to make my way to a sink with cold water, but I had been stopped suddenly. Dmitri stood and rested his hand around my wrist. "Please, sit. There's no need to leave." His voice was so melodious.

Our food had been placed before us, but Dmitri never took his eyes away from mine. "I'm sorry." I apologized.

"Don't be sorry." He extended his hand across the table and pushed the loose strands of hair out of my face and behind my ear, and his fingers ran down from my neck to my collar bone. A chill ran down my spine, but my face remained warm.

My breathing intensified, but I remained seated the best I could. A while had gone by as we ate our food, and we were so swept up in our conversation that we didn't notice how much time had slipped by.

"Oh my, I almost forgot. I have to run back in the mall for an item. Do you think you could wait for me in there?" He asked.

"Well sure, I have nothing special planned anyway. Besides, it's only after two o' clock."

"Thank you."

We paid our bills separately- since I wouldn't let him pay for my half- and we went back into the shopping mall. My phone went off as he walked away, and it was a text from Emlyn saying that she couldn't stay over tonight. I responded back and walked into a couple of stores before heading off to find Dmitri. Having my old best friend back had brought so many happy memories and flashbacks of when I was a little girl.

Around the corner at the end of the mall, I spotted him standing outside of a shop on his phone, talking seriously with someone in Russian. He wore an irritated expression during the entire conversation, but I stood where I was and watched him. He noticed me moments later, so he turned and muttered something into the phone and then hung up. He walked toward me with a small bag in his hand, and his expression went through a drastic change.

He smiled at me and his features were no longer hardened. "Sorry about that, it was a business call."

"I'm sorry if I interrupted, I just found you." I smiled.

"It's not a problem, Terra." He smiled back at me. "I got what I came for, so would you like to go somewhere with me?"

"Of course! Where did you have in mind?"

"The lake, preferably. I haven't seen that view in so long. There's nothing quite like it." He said.

"Alright, I'll hop in my car and you can follow?"

"I'm afraid I don't have my car, my sister decided to keep it back in Moscow." He laughed.

"That's fine with me, that means you can admire my car." I grinned.

"You must have a beauty then." He laughed whole kindheartedly.

"You have no idea." I laughed in response.

The drive to the lake had been eventful; we laughed and sang songs that played on the radio, and we talked about so many things of new and old. We walked through the sand with bare feet, enjoying the feeling on the sun warming the grains beneath us. I hadn't paid much attention to the view, because all attention was focused on him. As I glanced up, I noticed he wasn't much for the view of the water either. Once in a while, I would steal a glance of him, and our eyes would lock for that brief moment, yet I could never hold the gaze due to my shy nature.

"Well, I truly am glad to have seen you again, Terra. It was the best day I could ask for." He smiled, then he stopped and looked directly at me.

"I couldn't agree more, I just wish it didn't have to end..." I frowned.

"You know, it doesn't have to."
An unexpected visit from a long lost friend brings up old and buried feelings inside
of Terra.
