Chapter 9

In a deep cave located secretly among the rocks and overgrown moss just mere miles away from Reaver's hidden mansion, a meeting had begun to take place between the high class people of Albion. Many noblemen and women had left in secrecy as they ran throughout the woods as they banished their posh clothing, throwing on dark cloaks to blend in with the forest and to hide their forms. Soundless through the trees, more had crept into the cave as they found the hidden entrance, only returning guests would know exactly where to go. They had entered the small corridor that lead into a large open area of the cave, chairs and tables lining it, and in the middle sat an altar with three large stone tables, and the guests quickly morphed into their true forms of the balverine.

"Welcome brothers and sisters." A deep, guttural voice greeted the small crowd.

The members bowed their heads in return and made their way to their usual seats around the altar. Several victims had been tied up and laid upon the stone slabs for when the moon would rise to it's highest peak, but there had been one empty space.

"Sir," one of the members had called to Jim, who stood near the entrance of the cave. "why is our space empty? Did we not meet our quota of humans worthy enough?" His muzzle moved about as his growls sounded like words to the man.

"Oh dear boy, quite the opposite! That is reserved for someone special among us tonight, and he will be joining us soon."

The group chattered amongst themselves in curiosity of what they had been planning, but the time drew closer, because Reaver himself had entered the cave followed by two large men carrying a young man with a cloth over his head. They had slammed him onto the slab and quickly tightened the bonds to his arms and legs, and he continued to struggle with as much fierceness as he could dish out.

"Brothers! Sisters! You're all here for yet another wonderful night of transformation, but this time, it is no ordinary night. The boy brought here before you has been chosen as the ultimate alpha for the Balverine Order, the almost long-forgotten white balverine." Reaver gestured with his walking stick toward the blind folded boy. The crowd before him gasped and mumbled in surprise. "Remove the hood."

Jim quickly scurried to his side and snatched the cloth from the boy's head, and Lucas gasped at the sight of the hideous creatures before him who growled and barked among each other.

"here is none other than a descendant of the Thomas Kirkman, culprit of destroying the original Order. I give you, Lucas Locke." Reaver sneered at the boy. "Treat him nicely though, he will be joining us shortly." Reaver then turned to him and smiled as his eyes shifted, Lucas gasped at the sudden change. "I don't take this form often, so consider yourself very lucky."

His bones cracked as Jim's did when Lucas was first introduced to this chaos, and he doubled in size with tufts of black fur sprouting and his muzzle growing longer. Before the boy stood an overly large black balverine, and he stood even taller than the others. His eyes remained blue as he looked straight into Lucas's.

"This may hurt." Reaver chuckled deeply. He whipped back his head and lashed out a long howl that the rest of the Order followed suit. It echoed throughout the cave and the tied individuals had begun to panic, pulling at their shackles. In unison, Reaver had bit down on Lucas's neck as the two large men took the tied people and bit down onto them. All three cried out in agony, and Lucas even attempted to kick Reaver off of him with no luck, his new form was four times as strong as any human would ever be.The balverines pulled back and licked their muzzles clean. "Let the transformation begin..." Reaver growled.

A large group of men had returned to the mercenary camp when the sun was high in the sky, and Anneleise had been waiting on the post tower to watch them all come toward her, too excited to wait for them to even enter the camp. When they were close enough, she dropped down and waved her hands high above her, greeting them happily. Their trip had taken a bit longer than expected since they had run into a traveling pack of balverines, but the captain was happy to be greeted by his new favorite crew member after a long journey.

Anneleise smiled wide once Saker had been in earshot. "Welcome back, captain." She shot him a mock salute and quickly ran up to him, the dust kicked up around her. She then slowed her pace and strolled up to him with her cheeks red, and she smiled warmly as he looked down at her. "How was the trip?"

"Bloody tiring, but successful all the same. I even picked ya up a little somethin'."Saker wore a crooked grin as his lit cigar moved in his mouth, and he handed the girl a sack.

Her eyes widened with excitement and she quickly dug in the bag, and she pulled out a very well-made pistol named the Tea Killer Shooter, and a set of crystal daggers which resembled the Channeler sword. She inspected each weapon carefully as all of the men passed by and walked back into the camp and straight to their beds. "Captain, they're amazing! I love them, thank you!" She said happily, clutching the bag to her chest.

"Later on, I'll help ya at the shooting range, top of the hill." He grinned, then he began to walk into the camp, and of course, Anneleise was close behind him.

She further inspected the weapons and noticed all of the intricate details along the hilts, wondering how such craftsmanship was accomplished. The day progressed with the dividing of the mens findings and the sharing of their stories, which Anneleise listened intently to each story, and just simply enjoyed everyone's company. Saker then came up to her while everyone else sat back and drank, and she felt something shift in her as he looked down at her with his eyes and his soft smile. He beckoned to her and led her to the top of the hill where the shooting range was, and she pulled the pistol from her belt and held it awkwardly. Saker laughed deeply and he grabbed the gun from her and moved her fingers where they needed to be. The touch of his hands against hers made her smile, and she looked down at the gun with such wonder and excitement, then she looked back up at him and laughed.

"You see that target here in the first row?" The captain asked, and she nodded as she looked to where he pointed. "Alright, I want ya to take aim, breathe in through your nose and out of your mouth and then pull the trigger." He was behind her and his arm matched up with hers as he guided her on how to hold the weapon, and her cheeks practically burned with embarrassment. "Always work with a straight form in the beginning, then once you ease into it, you can shoot however you'd like."

She did as he instructed her and held her posture straight as she aimed at the wooden cut out before her, then moments later, a shot rang out and it went straight through the target's head. "Wow..." She breathed with a large smile.

"Bloody good, ya did it. Again, this time at the target above the tree." Saker said happily. He watched the girl take aim and successfully hit her target each time as instructed, and she jumped up and down with a loud laugh. "You're a natural, lovie."

The nickname made her stop and she turned back to look at him, and he had already been looking at her. He had taken a liking to the girl since he found her on the ship just weeks prior, and her eyes had been a very difficult thing to look away from. For such a small and innocent young woman, Saker had found it odd -yet intriguing- that he had warmed up to her so easily, and he had felt something for her. Intimate? No, that's just silly, he felt no such things for people. Only respect. That must have been it. Anneleise smirked and waited for him. "Captain...?" She tilted her head slightly and waited to see if he would respond.

"Y-yeah lovie, let's get back to the group. I need to start up the fire for the roast soon." He moved away from her and sighed, then he quickly walked away as he left her behind him.

Anneleise stood there and felt somewhat hurt as he left her behind. There was a loud cheer once Saker had walked back into the camp area, and Anneleise stood there for a while longer as she fiddled with her small daggers, twirling them with her fingers like a knife thrower would do. She tossed it up and caught it, repeating the action as she walked down the dusty path back toward the camp. She didn't join them though, instead she went into the cabin where she last slept, and she sat within the large chair and continued to play with the daggers. Her heart thudded against her chest, and her mind spun out of control with her new thoughts.
